With Total and Permanent Disability cover, a lump sum benefit is paid by the insurance company, if the insured is disabled as defined in the policy.

Definitions of what constitutes TPD vary, however, generally TPD is said to have occurred if sickness or injury prevents you from working in your own or any occupation for which you are suited by training, education or experience.

Types of illnesses and injuries that can result in total and permanent disablement include: blindness, cancer, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disorders, arthritis, loss of a limb, spinal cord injuries, heart attack.

The illness or accident DOES NOT have to be the result of a work injury in order for you to be able to make a claim. This is a common error that people make, that is, they think TPD must be the result of a work injury. TPD is a separate claim and you may be able to receive benefits under this cover even if you have made a claim for worker’s compensation, motor vehicle accident compensation, medical negligence or public liability.
